Growing up, I was a Blockbuster kid for sure. Well actually, I went to the local video store in my hometown. We rented movies every Friday night and ordered takeout. Sometimes, the whole family came through. Most of these visits were when we got horror movies.

With that said, we ended up with a lot of new worldwide releases and some odd choices. Because the latter movies were so random, the details just didn’t seem real until I found these movies. Here’s a small list of the whacky, but enjoyable

Shadow Builder

Familiar Faces:

  • Michael Rooker, from The Walking Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Tony Todd of Candyman and Final Destination fame.

Written by Bram Stoker

This movie felt like a fever dream. Like distant memories that were trapped in the banks of my mind just waiting to be freed. I found this movie last year after many nights of searching “shadow demon movie hunted by priest”. Michael Rooker played the role of priest, so there’s the fun. It was like End of Days meets Insidious. If you just want to get some quick entertainment in, it’s worth the free viewing on Tubi.

NightBreed

Familiar Faces:

  • Kyra Sedgwick of The Closer and Brooklyn Nine Nine
  • Debora Weston starred in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory

Screenplay and Directing by Clive Barker

This one is a bit of a cult classic. The legendary Clive Barker gave us mystical monsters in their own world met by the danger of humanity. This was very fun to see in part of the character designs. Just look at the poster! Honestly, that’s what drew me in, it was pretty kick-ass.

Wishmaster

Familiar Faces:

  • Andrew Divoff of Lost
  • Robert Englund, Mr. Freddy Krueger himself

Produced by Wes Craven

You can never go wrong with Wes Craven at the helm, unless you’re watching My Soul To Take.

Sorry, Wes!

The concept of this one was very fun. We even saw a lot of movies take a lot of its ploys all of these years later — the whole “make a wish” and then a bad thing happens as a result. This dude, the Djinn, played by Divoff, was definitely wild. He’s easily one of the scariest looking villains in horror.

Well there’s a bit of fun for your reading pleasure. These movies are all over streaming, so you can catch up on them at any time. Enjoy a night in with any of the three and don’t let them slip your mind like me.
